International English Language Testing System is designed to measure the ability of effective communication across four major language skills – listening, reading, writing and speaking. The test is conducted by British Council and IDP Australia at select centers in India and abroad. IELTS is required to be taken by those planning to undertake academic courses in UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada, by medical professionals planning to work or study in UK, Australia and USA and those emigrating to any of these countries.

IELTS is offered in two modules – General Training and Academic. The Academic module is meant for those targeting academic curses while the General Training or GT module as it is popularly known as is for those planning emigration.

Each section i.e. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking is marked individually on a band scale of 0-9 and the average is taken to give the overall score.

Score reporting:

The scores are declared in 13 days and are available on the website of British Council. The scorecard is mailed to the candidate within 15 days and the scores are valid for a period of 2 years from the date of the test.

Test Registration:

Registration for IELTS can be done online at or by filling in the IELTS application form and submitting it at the authorized British Council Test registration center. The payment can be made either by credit card or at select branches of ICICI Bank. The examination fee is 7200 INR.
