Singapore being the industrial hub of Asia and owing to its nearness to India is a much-desired educational destination for Indian students. Singapore proffers world-class quality education backed by good industrial placement and bright chances of career enhancement. Singapore education is known for its cutting edge courses in IT, hospitality and business. Moreover, the tie-ups with foreign universities give a chance to students to avail international education at comparatively low costs.

Education System:

Singapore has three national universities namely National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University. There are a lot of private academic institutions and a number of foreign universities have campuses in Singapore like the Newcastle University, Australia, Insead, France, University of Wales, UK, University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA.

A major benefit for students is the Student Protection Scheme, under which international students pay their course fee directly to the Bank via TT (Telegraphic Transfer) slip, when they attend class in Singapore. If the academic institution fails to operate the Bank refunds the entire fee directly to the student.

Admission Requirements:

Singapore education maintains high standards of quality assurance and follows stringent student recruitment mechanism.

Admission to undergraduate programs especially at national universities is strictly on merit basis coupled with the demonstration of strong aptitude and requisite skills for the chosen course. Some universities may require the student to take SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) testing them on their verbal, quantitative reasoning and writing skills.

A flair for the subject, an aptitude for research, consistently bright academic record, completion of 3 years Bachelor’s degree, good command over English language and requisite work experience (if applicable) is the criteria for admission to most masters programs.

MBA programs of Insead, Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and National University of Singapore are world-renowned. Admission to these is highly competitive and requires a candidate to possess minimum 3-4 years of rich managerial experience and GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) scores in the range of 680-750 besides an exceptionally bright academic track record.

English Language Requirement:

The students are either required to take IELTS or produce a certificate from school stating that their entire education has been through English medium. Most of the courses require an IELTS score of 6.5 bands or higher.

Admission Process:

Most universities and private institutions have intakes in August and January. The application process takes around 3-4 months. The students are required to fill the course specific application form and send all academic credentials, experience certificates, tests score reports, letter of intent, reference letters and other supporting documents to the international admission office of the concerned institution. Once the admission committee approves the admission, the student receives the offer letter and the payment letter. The student is required to disburse the registration fee of the institution and the visa fee and also send all the visa documents to the institution. In case of government schools the students may also be required to pass a placement test conducted by the university or qualify the Certification Test conducted by Principals academy Inc (PAI).

Tuition & Living Costs:

Average living cost is 20000 SGD p.a. The annual tuition fee for undergraduate programs ranges from 10000 to 20000 SGD and for postgraduate programs from 15000 to 25000. Though some courses in medicine may cost up to 80000 SGD p.a. All students are required to make a biennial donation to the Education Fund of 1000 SGD every two years.

Financial Assistance:

At Undergraduate level the Singapore Airlines offers scholarships for academically bright students awarded on the basis of a written test followed by interview. The national universities and campuses of foreign universities give limited scholarships to deserving students. Need based bursaries of not more than 1500 SGD per academic year are also available for students. Singapore Government does not allow students to work part-time during their study period.

The visa process takes around 15-30 days. Upon receipt of offer letter from the institution, the student is required to send Form 16 and V36, Escrow Form, Educational certificates, Student/Agent declaration, Birth certificate, Financial statement of 15000 SGD and proof of no gaps in education to the Immigration & Check Points Authority along with visa fees. Future Prospects:

With More than 2000 MNCs having their offices in Singapore, the demand for educated and skilled workforce is ever increasing. Low density of population and high demand for skilled migration makes acquiring permanent residency and citizenship status faster. For becoming a Singapore permanent resident the candidate has to work in Singapore for a minimum period of 2 years on P, Q or S work pass. A Singapore permanent resident can claim Singapore citizenship status within 2 years of gaining permanent residency subject to fulfillment of necessary requirements.
