Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL iBT) is an English Language proficiency test conducted by Educational Testing Services (ETS). All natives of non-English speaking countries require to take the test for admission to academic courses at universities and colleges in English speaking countries or for emigration to these countries. It is one of the most popular English proficiency tests and earlier it was very popular for admission to the United States and Canadian universities but now this test is widely accepted by universities in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Europe and other Asian countries as well.
The Internet based test (iBT) measures the listening, reading, writing and speaking skills and also requires the test taker to combine 2 or more skills to respond to a question. From August 01, 2019 the duration of the TOEFL test is reduced to approximately 3 hours. The revised TOEFL test pattern is as follows:
Test Pattern:
Section | No of Questions/Tasks | Type of Questions | Time |
Reading | 30-40 | 3-4 passages from academic texts; approximately 700 words long; 12-14 questions per passage. | 54-72 minutes |
Listening | 28-39 | 3-4 lectures, some with classroom discussion; each 3-5 minutes long; 6 questions each. 2-3 conversations; each 3 minutes long; 5 questions each | 41-57 minutes |
Speaking | 4 | 1 task to express an opinion on a familiar topic; 3 tasks to speak based on what is read and listened to. | 17 minutes |
Writing | 2 | 1 task to write based on what is read and listened to; 1 task to support an opinion on a topic. | 50 minutes |

RECENT UPDATES ON TOEFL TEST:
ETS, the company that conducts TOEFL worldwide, announces changes in the test from time to time. Some of the recent changes announced by ETS are:
In August 2019, ETS reduced the test duration to 3 hours. But, the question types remain unchanged.
In the Reading section, instead of 12 to 14 questions, the Reading Comprehension passages will now have 10 questions each. The duration of the reading section is between 54 to 72 minutes.
In the Listening section, the number of conversations (2 to 3) remains unchanged while the number of lectures has been reduced to 3 to 4 now. The duration of the listening section is between 41 to 57 minutes.
In the Speaking section, the total number of tasks is only 4 now instead of 6.
ETS has also introduced the ‘My Best Scores’ feature which we think is a very student-friendly feature and makes TOEFL more competitive. In this feature, best scores from all the four sections of the test will be taken from all the valid attempts the student has made in the past two years.
In August 2020, TOEFL test fee has been revised to USD 185 from USD 180.
