ETS offers GRE General Test and GRE Subject tests in 8 disciplines like biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, biology, chemistry, computer science, English literature, mathematics, physics and Psychology.

The GRE General test focuses on measuring the verbal and quantitative reasoning skills, critical thinking and analytical writing ability of the test taker. Conducted at various test centers across the globe, the test is designed to assess academic knowledge and skills essential for graduate school programs.

It is a computer adaptive test (CAT) wherein the computer chose questions based on the performance of the test taker in previous problems thereby suiting the ability and knowledge of the candidate. The test comprises of a pool of questions arranged according to their difficulty level. The first set of questions thrown is of average difficulty level and if answered successfully the computer selects the next questions of greater difficulty. However, if the questions are answered incorrectly the computer moves to lower difficulty questions.
